Radiograph (X-Ray) Policy

This office follows the guidelines and recommendations of the American Dental Association. The ADA recommends that FULL MOUTH X-RAYS (FMX) be taken once every 5 years and bitewing x-rays every year.

Bitewings are required every 2 years and dental exams are required every 13 months. Lack of compliance can and will result in being dismissed as a patient of our office. We follow these guidelines to comply with the ADA in order to provide our patients with the best care.

Current X-rays will be necessary before any diagnosis can be finalized. This is in order to provide the patient with the best care and the most accurate treatment planning. No extractions can be done without a current image of that area. An x-ray called a Periapical (PA) showing the root and surrounding bone and soft tissue is typically utilized. A Panorex film may also be used if applicable. No fillings can be placed without current bitewings and/or a PA of the tooth.

There will be no exceptions.

X-rays are used to diagnose

  • extent of bone loss associated with PERIODONTAL DISEASE
  • interproximal caries-decay in between the teeth
  • pathology of the pulp, bone, and root resorption
  • integrity of the root canal
  • verify tooth or root structure, supernumerary teeth, and impacted teeth
  • third molar (wisdom teeth) location and position

RADIATION EXPOSURE is kept to a minimum. If you are medically compromised, please provide the front office with documentation from your Medical Doctor.
