invisalignFor teens and adults who want straight, attractive and great functioning teeth, without the look of metal braces, Invisalign custom aligners can be the solution. These clear plastic, comfortable tooth aligners resemble dental whitening trays but are fabricated from a virtually invisible thermoplastic material, not the metal or porcelain of more traditional braces. While teeth are being straightened, patients enjoy wearing comfortable, smooth and far less obvious orthodontic appliances.

How long does treatment with Invisalign take?

According to an individualized treatment plan that is put together by a dentist or orthodontist, Invisalign aligners gradually and gently exert pressures on certain teeth for a specific period of time. Then, the next set of aligners, which move other teeth in the mouth, take their place. The plan continues until the new smile is complete - usually 9 to 18 months for most individuals. Treatment time depends on how simple or complex the patient's case is, but typically, treatment with Invisalign takes no longer than traditional wire and bracket braces.

Daily living with Invisalign is easy.

Invisalign appliances are worn 20 to 22 hours per day, with aligners changed out about every 2 weeks. Because the aligners are removable, the patient can take them out while eating or for special occasions. Check-ups with the dentist are scheduled very 4 to 6 weeks.

Regarding care, patients say their mouths are comfortable, with no irritation or sores so common with traditional braces. The aligners are simply removed for normal tooth brushing and flossing and then replaced.

What are the other advantages of Invisalign?

Treatment with Invisalign can correct many common orthodontic problems such as:

  • teeth with gaps
  • crowded teeth
  • overbite
  • under bite
  • cross bite
  • open bite

The cosmetic benefits of correcting these problems is obvious, but people should realize the many health benefits of a straight, attractive smile. When teeth line up as they should, the individual is less prone to gum disease, cavities, mouth sores and uneven, excessive and premature wearing down of the teeth. Remember, too, that dental health directly impacts overall health. Invisalign, then, assists the individual with both.

Who should get Invisalign?

The answer to that question lies in the consultation between patient and dentist. While Invisalign may not be appropriate for very complex orthodontic cases, the aligners are the perfect solution for a great many teens and adults.
