If your child has a damaged or decayed tooth, you may think that, since the baby tooth will fall out on its own anyway, it is better to simply extract the tooth. However, keeping baby teeth in place until they fall out naturally is important to the mouth’s growth and development. Dental crowns help preserve the tooth’s structure and prevent extraction. Learn more about dental crowns for your child with Knutson Family Dentistry.
What is a dental crown?
A dental crown protects and stabilizes a tooth. Most dental cases which require a crown include a severely decayed, broken, or an otherwise compromised tooth. Crowns are commonly used after root canal therapy to protect the tooth’s large filling. Made from porcelain, dental crowns fit over the top of and around the sides of a tooth, encompassing it completely.
Should my child get dental crowns?
Crowns can greatly benefit children’s “baby” teeth. These teeth act as a placeholder for the permanent teeth which will eventually grow in. Baby teeth also ensure children chew their food properly, learn to speak correctly and guide the permanent teeth into place, once they begin growing in. If your child has a damaged tooth, a dental crown can preserve the tooth’s natural structure, allowing these important processes to take place naturally.
Same Day Crowns
Traditional dental crowns require the help of a dental laboratory who designs and creates the crown itself. The process usually takes around two weeks and requires a second dental appointment to place the final crown. However, same day crowns allow your dentist to skip the laboratory step altogether. This saves patients time, laboratory fees and extra dental appointments.
Your dentist will use specialized technology to take a 3D model of your mouth which transfers to a computer software program. The program allows your dentist to create the design of the crown, then send the design to a machine which carves the crown out of a block of ceramic. Same day crowns only take a few minutes to design and create.
